USPS to Honor LGBT Civil Rights Hero Harvey Milk with New Stamp

USPS to Honor LGBT Civil Rights Hero Harvey Milk with New StampThe United States Postal Service has confirmed that LGBT civil rights hero Harvey Milk will be commemorated on a 2014 U.S. postage stamp.

Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected into public office in California, is believed to be the first openly LGBT person to ever be featured on a U.S. stamp. The Harvey Milk Foundation reports that the stamp’s design is expected to be unveiled soon.

HRC President Chad Griffin previously spoke out in support of efforts to rename San Francisco International Airport in honor of Milk, and we applaud the United States Postal Service’s decision to honor Milk’s pioneering legacy and spread his message of hope to households across America with this new stamp.

With tomorrow’s National Coming Out Day just around the corner, hear recordings of Harvey Milk and others talking about the importance of coming out in HRC’s latest video below.
