The State of E-learning and the Potential it Offers Nonprofits (And All Other Sectors)

In his ground-breaking book, Leap of Reason: Managing to Outcomes in an Era of Scarcity (2011), Mario Morino urged leaders of government, business and the philanthropic sectors to take “bold action” in order to focus increasingly limited resources where they do the most good in addressing pressing social needs. Inspired by Morino’s presentation about outcomes and evidence based philanthropy at the “After the Leap” conference a couple months ago, I wrote a blog on “Why the difference between outcomes and outputs matters“.

Now, based on a year of conversations he and his colleague, Katie Paris, had with more than 100 leading thinkers, practitioners, and entrepreneurs, Morino has just released a new report, Just in Time: The Beyond-the-Hype Potential of E-Learning.  This report explores the state of e-learning and the potential it offers across all sectors of our economy—far beyond the confines of formal education. Whether you’re a leader, worker in the trenches, or just a curious learner, imagine being able to access exactly what you need, when you need it, in a format that’s quick and easy to digest and apply. Much of this is now possible and within the next decade, just-in-time learning will likely become pervasive.

The takeaways from Morino’s new research are just as powerful and important to the philanthropic sector as Morino’s message about managing outcomes in an era of scarcity was at the After the Leap Conference.
