Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic (Make A Wish Mid Atlantic)
Make-A-Wish® was founded in 1980 with the mission to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. A wish experience can transform the lives of sick children, families and entire communities, not only at the time of the wish, but for years to come. Shortly after the founding of Make-A-Wish, local chapters began to emerge across the nation with the goal of reaching even more children and communities.
Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions who reside in Maryland, Washington, DC, northern Virginia and central and southern Delaware. Since our chapter’s foundation in 1983, we have given the gift of a wish to over 8,700 local children fighting life-threatening medical conditions such as cancer, pediatric AIDS, cystic fibrosis, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and heart disease.
A child's wish can fall into one of five categories:
- I wish...to be (eg. a zookeeper, a firefighter, a baker)
- I wish...to meet (e.g., a favorite celebrity or athlete)
- I wish...to have (e.g., a computer, a playset, a puppy)
- I wish...to go (e.g., to a theme park, Hawaii, a major sporting event)
- I wish...to give (e.g., a new set of uniforms to their classmates)
A wish granted creates a memorable experience for a child fighting a life-threatening medical condition and gives him/h something positive to think about instead of medical treatments and hospital visits. Recent wishes include visiting Florida, taking family vacations, shopping sprees, having bedrooms redecorated and meeting celebrities including the President.
