FTC Charges Four Cancer Charities with Fraud

Message from America’s Charities CEO & President:

Media reports over the past few days have featured four cancer charities that have been charged with fraud by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The four charities are Breast Cancer Society, Cancer Fund of America, Cancer Support Services, and Children’s Cancer Fund of America.

America’s Charities does not represent any of the charities under investigation.

America’s Charities’ member charities are selected with the great care and extra measures looking at various aspects of transparency and accountability as part of our membership vetting process.   We take great pride in our more than 35-year history of presenting donors and clients with charity choices they can trust have been thoughtfully reviewed.

Unfortunately, cases such as this do damage to the whole.  That’s why America’s Charities continues to have a strong voice in the industry and public discussion to provide employers, employees, donors and charities with more useful tools to measure transparency, good governance, accountability and financial stability.  Some of those tools include those provided by the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, Charting Impact, GreatNonprofits, GuideStar and America’s Charities High Performing Charities program.
