Melwood

Melwood has led the way to expand employment and other opportunities for people of differing abilities since 1963.
In the last 56 years, a lot has changed. When Melwood was founded, a child of differing abilities faced a grim future of likely institutionalization – with its inherent risks of neglect and abuse and complete lack of opportunity to develop skills and independence.

Now, at Melwood’s Camp Accomplish, children and teens can dream big. With adequate support, training and encouragement, they can choose their own paths –thanks to their early experience living, playing, and learning with peers of all levels of ability at our fully inclusive summer camp!

Shaping early perceptions of children of differing abilities paves the way for creating a world where people of differing abilities are fully included. YOU can help us make this happen! Please consider making a generous gift so that we can fund scholarships for Camp Accomplish, our inclusive camp for children of ALL abilities.

Camp Accomplish is just the beginning. With your support, Melwood is here to help people of differing abilities in every step of their journey. Our fully-integrated workforce includes nearly 1,000 people of differing abilities working alongside their typically-abled colleagues at more than 60 federal contract sites.

However, despite much progress, people of differing abilities are still more than twice as likely to be unemployed as the national average. Two-thirds of young people on the autism spectrum enter adulthood without a plan for employment or higher education. Meanwhile, with unprecedented low unemployment rates, employers are struggling to fill high-demand jobs.

So Melwood is connecting this untapped pipeline to the employers who need them with abilIT - our new IT skills and personal development support program for people of differing abilities, including those on the autism spectrum, and injured veterans.

Melwood serves veterans through Melwood Veterans Services (MVS). The Global War on Terror has produced more than a half million American veterans with service-related injuries. This is in addition to the pre-9/11 era veteran population, many of whom are still struggling with service-related trauma.

Thousands of these men and women are coping with invisible wounds, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and moral injury. They struggle to recover not only their health, but also their civilian or military lives: maintaining employment or duty status, finding jobs, rebuilding or maintaining family relationships, and figuring out their place in our communities. Their path is far from easy and many need our support.

Operation Tohidu® is a 5-day intensive retreat. Each session serves between 8-16 participants, including male and female veterans and service members representing all branches of service, as well as their spouses, partners or caregivers for a couple's retreat.

And - because Melwood doesn’t want financial hardship to be a barrier to participation, Operation Tohidu® is free for veterans to attend – and their travel costs are covered.

But, it costs Melwood $3,750 to bring each veteran to a retreat. So – Melwood Veteran Services urgently needs your support.

For every person Melwood supports, many more are still beyond the reach of our over-subscribed programs. Help us scale-up our programs by donating to Melwood as generously as you can and help create opportunities for many more people of differing abilities and injured veterans to transform their lives in programs like abilIT, Camp Accomplish and Melwood Veterans Services.
