Children's National is the only exclusive provider of pediatric care in the metropolitan Washington area and is the only freestanding children's hospital in the region. Children's National's internationally recognized team of pediatric healthcare professionals care for more than 230,000 patients each year who come from throughout the region, across the nation, and around the world. Serving as an advocate for all children, Children's National is the largest non-governmental provider of pediatric care in the District of Columbia, providing more than $66 million in uncompensated care each year. In addition, Children's serves as the regional referral center for pediatric emergency, trauma, cancer, cardiac, and critical care, as well as neonatology, orthopedic surgery, neurology, and neurosurgery.
In addition to the main hospital, Children's National has seven regional outpatient centers and affiliated partnerships that provides specialty care around the region. Children's National also has numerous programs focused on school health series, mobile health services, community partnerships, and safety campaigns.

U.S. News also ranked the neonatology program at Children’s National number one—the best among more than 1,500 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across the country—and seven other Children’s National services in the Top 10. Children's National also has been recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Magnet designated hospital, the highest level of recognition for nursing excellence that a medical center can achieve.
