The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp Fund

Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides "a different kind of healing" to more than 20,000 seriously ill children and family members annually - all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn., in more than 40 hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities, and through other outreach activities across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Camp's programs are designed to restore normalcy, nurture powerful friendships and supportive social networks, and challenge perceived limitations associated with pediatric illnesses. This is accomplished through an integrated "Camp-Around Care" model to engage children and families throughout the year. Camp provides seamless year-round programming to support families through the illness process. Our programs have a unique healing impact on the seriously ill children and families we serve.

Camp’s signature summer program consists of 7 week-long sessions for seriously ill children and one session for siblings of children with serious illnesses. Children aged 7 to 15; with a diagnosis of malignancy, genetic blood disorder, HIV, or metabolic disorders, residing in New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania attend sessions 1-7.

Camp continues to work with NORD (National Organization for Rare Disorders) to identify children and families living with rare illnesses in need of a Camp experience. 

Family weekends allow families to bond with each other and experience the simple joy of being together away from the day-to-day medical stresses they face. The weekends also offer a needed opportunity for families to forge new friendships with kindred spirits who share common hardships and hopes.  

Since its founding in 1988, the Camp has evolved from a summer program to a vibrant year-round community that operates both onsite and regional programs throughout the Northeast. Our organizational growth has and continues to be inextricably linked to the diverse needs of the children and families in our care. Parent-specific programs were added in the early 1990s, followed shortly by family retreats during weekends throughout the spring and fall. In 2002, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp launched its Hospital Outreach Program, which extends the hope and healing power of Camp to hospitalized children across the Northeast. Altogether, Camp’s year-round program offerings enable a continuity of care that seamlessly engages children, families, and healthcare professionals. 
 
The programs of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp are designed to enhance peer support networks and strengthen the social and emotional capital of the children and families in our care. The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp maintains scalable and sustainable program growth designed to preserve our core values - safety, camaraderie, possibility, appreciation - while expanding services impacting the lives of more children, families, and healthcare professionals each year. 

We accomplish our funding goals through specific action steps related to event fundraising, individual gifts, capital campaigns, a corporate sponsorship program, event auction income, foundation grants, external events sponsored by organizations, website contributions, planned giving, stewardship, and gift processing and reporting. Contrary to popular belief, more than 98% of our operating support is derived from sources other than Newman's Own.

The Caring Foundation of Texas

PURPOSE: Currently, 2.5 million children living in Texas go without all the necessary immunizations to lead healthy, happy lives due to a lack of affordability and access to medical care. Yet, immunizing children is one of the most direct, simple and least expensive ways to build healthier futures for medically underserved families in Texas. For more than two decades, the primary goal of the Caring for Children Foundation of Texas' Care Van Program has been to provide free life-saving vaccines to medically uninsured or underserved Texas children. In addition to life-saving vaccines, the program collaborates with health departments, schools and community organizations across the state to provide oral care, hearing and vision screenings, and health education.         

MISSION: The mission of the Caring for Children Foundation of Texas is to provide improved access to immunizations for medically uninsured and underserved Texas children as well as targeted preventative and health education services. 

PROGRAM BENEFITS: Using its fleet of specially customized mobile immunization "Care Vans", the Care Van Program is able to serve as a "mobile clinic" by visiting schools, houses of worship, restaurants, shopping centers, public housing and neighborhood events to conduct immunization outreach in the communities where medical and/or public health services are limited. Immunizations provided are those recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Texas Department of Health and Human Services; including but not limited to new immunizations, "booster" vaccine updates, and influenza vaccine. Specifically, mobile outreach clinics are often facilitated during the evening hours and/or the weekend for the convenience of working parents. It's the only statewide program of its kind.          

RESULTS: Since 1997, the Care Van Program has reached nearly 919,700 children and provided almost 1.5 million vaccines through August 2022; a significant achievement in the area of public health. Over the past several years, the program has also provided dental screenings and sealants to nearly 395,000 children and over 669,000 additional health screenings including blood pressure checks, glucose screenings, body fat analysis and strength testing during community health events.  All services are provided by licensed health care providers, community volunteers and emergency medical service personnel.

Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic (Make A Wish Mid Atlantic)

Founded in 1983, Make-A-Wish® Mid-Atlantic has granted over 10,000 wishes of children fighting critical illnesses.

• For every wish granted, there is at least one local child waiting to receive a wish.
• The Mid-Atlantic chapter serves children who reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland and northern Virginia.
• Any child facing a critical illness who is between the ages of two and a half and under the age of 18 at the time of referral and who has not previously been granted a wish by any Make-A-Wish chapter or by any other wish-granting organization is eligible for a wish.
• Following referral, a certified medical professional must verify that the child has a critical illness. There are no other qualifications based on sex, race, religion, socioeconomic status or any other demographic category.
• More than 450 volunteers help the Mid-Atlantic chapter maintain its grassroots support by delivering the organization’s mission to seriously ill children.
• Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic is one of 60 Make-A-Wish chapters. Make-A-Wish America is located in Phoenix, AZ.

A child's wish can fall into one of five categories:  

I wish...to be (eg. a zookeeper, a firefighter, a baker)
I wish...to meet (e.g., a favorite celebrity or athlete)
I wish...to have (e.g., a computer, a playset, a puppy)
I wish...to go (e.g., to a theme park, Hawaii, a major sporting event)
I wish...to give (e.g., a new set of uniforms to their classmates)      

A wish granted creates a memorable experience for a child fighting a critical illness and gives the child something positive to think about instead of medical treatments and hospital visits.
