Detailed Description of National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization that generates increased public support for the law enforcement profession by permanently recording and appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and promoting law enforcement safety. In 1991, the Memorial Fund built and dedicated the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, a magnificent three-acre monument on federal park land in Washington, DC. The Memorial honors the more than 18,200 federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty dating back to the first known death in 1792. An estimated 200,000 people visit the Memorial each year. At an annual candlelight vigil held in May each year during National Police Week, new names of fallen officers are added to the Memorial. More than 20,000 people attend this event, which is the traditional kick-off for National Police Week activities in our Nation’s Capital. The Memorial Fund has now embarked on plans to build the National Law Enforcement Museum, the largest and most comprehensive museum of its kind in the world. The Museum, scheduled to open in 2013, will help to generate a better understanding and appreciation of the vital contributions our law officers have made to our nation. Located adjacent to the Memorial in Judiciary Square, this "glimpse behind the badge" will offer approximately 18,000 square feet of exhibition space and will house a collection of the nation's most significant law enforcement artifacts. The major emphasis will be on educating visitors about the essential role that law enforcement plays in a free society. The museum's galleries will provide visitors with an assortment of entertaining and engaging interactive and participatory learning experiences aimed at audiences of all ages.
